Project
Goals:
Considering the countless possibilities that I could've come up with, through my study of game design there were certain goals that I wished to achieve throughout the creation process:
- Create at least one level of a playable computer game
- Learn how to utilize game creating software such as Unity
- Decide if this was an interest I wished to continue to pursue
- Learn more about the process of game creation
:Timeline of Fieldwork:
Step 1) Find Mentor/decide on project
One of the initially most challenging pieces to my project was obtaining a mentor. This was due to my lack of contacts, and idea of where to look for someone who may have had any sort of coding experience.
Step 2) Decide which game engine to use
This step was really a simple decision. I had neither the knowledge nor any bias towards the two possible game engines (Unity or Unreal) and so in the end, I sided with my mentors suggestion of Unity.
Step 3) Begin process of learning Code
The next very important step was begin to learn the actual coding that I would be using to code my game. For the most part this was comprised of watching an extensive number tutorials that Unity offered.
Step 4) Start creating a game
With the very limited knowledge I had obtained, I began working on designs for my game. This included buying assets from Unity in order fill the artwork and sounds, coding the actual project and play testing it to ensure it was what I wanted.
Step 4.25) CodingThe first step to creating the game was the coding of the player in the game, as well as the objects he could interact with.
|
Step 4.5) settingThe next main step was establishing a background using pictures and animation to add to the standard game play to give it a more immersive feeling.
|
Step 4.75) AudioLastly adding music in the background as well as basic sound effects allowed for the game to become more three dimensional.
|
Step 5) Play testing
While this is less of a real step and more of me just enjoying the game, I have spent a decent amount of time actually running through the level I had created to fine tweak certain mechanics of it.
Step 6) Additional Elements
The next step in my game creation process will be to research other elements that I may be interested in adding to my game in order to improve upon the foundation that I have already created.
